A Different Way of Doing Things: Judel Edwards' Journey to Independence
After a life-changing workplace accident left him with devastating injuries, Judel Edwards faced months of treatment and rehabilitation as he adapted to a very different way of life. Now, through advanced prosthetic technology and intensive rehabilitation, he is working towards regaining the independence he once enjoyed.
Born on the Caribbean island of Grenada, Judel is a devoted husband and father of two. Before his injury, he lived an active life, balancing family life with work as a line worker for an electric company. "I was quite active. I played football and cricket and did a lot of DIY projects around the house. I was always someone who liked to stay busy and active," said Judel.
In August 2024, everything changed. While carrying out a routine task as a trainee, Judel suffered a devastating electrical shock of 6,350 volts. The accident left him with life-threatening injuries and began a complex medical journey that would take him across three countries. Reflecting on the incident, Judel said: "It could easily have been a life-or-death situation. A few more seconds and I probably wouldn't be here."
Following the accident, Judel was airlifted to Trinidad for specialist burns treatment. Despite the efforts of the medical team, the severity of his injuries resulted in both of his arms being amputated below the elbow. His recovery was then complicated by a severe antibiotic-resistant infection, requiring him to be transferred to Colombia for specialist treatment. Over the following weeks, he faced further setbacks, including a blackout episode, a blood transfusion and the ongoing risk of sepsis.
After months of treatment in Trinidad and Colombia, Judel was finally reunited with his family to begin the next stage of his recovery. Being back with his family highlighted just how much day-to-day life had changed. "When I finally got home, that was when it really hit me emotionally. I stood there looking at my children and realised I couldn't even pick them up. That was a difficult moment," said Judel.
Determined to regain his independence, Judel began researching advanced prosthetic options. Following his initial prosthetic fitting in Colombia, he continued exploring solutions that would help him return to a more active lifestyle. His search eventually led him to Dorset Orthopaedic, where he found a combination of advanced prosthetic technology and specialist rehabilitation support.
Today, Judel is focused on rebuilding his confidence and independence through intensive rehabilitation. From preparing food and making sandwiches to painting, folding clothes and mastering everyday household tasks, each milestone is another step forward in his rehabilitation journey. For Judel, these achievements are helping him work towards a clear goal: "My goal is to get back to having a life again. I want to be active, independent and able to do the things I enjoy."
The supportive environment at Dorset Orthopaedic has played an important role in that journey. Judel describes the experience as being unlike anything he expected: "It doesn't feel like I'm coming to therapy. It feels like I'm coming to spend time with friends. Everyone has been so supportive and encouraging. The atmosphere here makes a huge difference."
As he continues to make progress, Judel remains focused on returning to work and getting back to the activities that have always been important to him.
Reflecting on his experience, he hopes his story will encourage others facing similar challenges: "If you're at the beginning of this journey, keep looking at the bigger picture. There is a reason you're still here, even if you can't see it yet."
Despite everything he has endured, Judel remains grateful for the progress he has made and determined to keep moving forward. "In a split second, my life changed forever, but I'm grateful to be alive and determined to get back to being me."
