For individuals affected by stroke, brain injury, incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy (CP), or other neurological conditions that impair movement and function, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) systems offer an effective treatment option. Devices such as the Bioness L300 Go, L100 Go, and H200 Wireless System can help restore mobility by lifting the foot to improve walking and prevent falls, or by enabling hand function to grasp and hold objects with greater ease.

What is FES?

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a treatment that uses small electrical impulses to stimulate muscles or nerves weakened or paralysed. The intensity of the electrical stimulation is customised to each patient’s needs. At Dorset Orthopaedic, we partner with Ottobock and Bioness to provide solutions for individuals with Drop Foot, using the L300 Go and L100 Go to activate the muscles responsible for foot lifting, and for patients with limited hand function, we offer the H200 system to restore hand mobility.

What to expect at your appointment.

During your appointment, one of our experienced orthotists will conduct a thorough assessment, including a detailed medical history and physical examination. The FES system will then be carefully set up and tested, starting with seated trials to ensure proper fit and function. Once the initial settings are calibrated, you will move on to walking trials, where the system’s parameters will be fine-tuned for optimal performance, comfort, and effectiveness. Our team will ensure the device is tailored to your specific needs, providing the best possible outcome for your mobility and rehabilitation.

How does FES work?

The Bioness L300 Go and L100 Go systems are worn as a cuff just below the knee (with an optional thigh cuff for the L300 Go, if needed). When you begin to walk, the device uses an embedded gyroscope and accelerometer to detect your movement and position. It then delivers electrical stimulation to the nerves controlling the muscles responsible for lifting your foot, ensuring a smooth, controlled foot lift and swing. Once your foot touches the ground, the stimulation stops. The discreet cuff can be easily worn under clothing for comfort and convenience.
