Finding the Right Option

Socket comfort is one of the most important factors for me when it comes to wearing my prosthesis. I am a very active individual; I go to the gym 5 days a week and like to do cardio 2-3 times a week. I feel like I am a very independent individual, so when I feel like I can no longer wear my leg on occasion because of discomfort, it does affect me mentally as it is extremely frustrating. I am constantly on the move so when it comes to getting a socket made, comfort is an absolute must for me.

I have had my fair share of experiences with trying different types of sockets such as the suction socket, however, with me; I find that the good old-fashioned socket and sleeve works best for me. I have been going to Dorset Orthopaedic now for over 20 years now and they have consistently provided me with socket that fits with minimal appointments. This is another important factor for me as I live nearly 2 hours away; I am unable to take lots of time off work. This is where Dorset excels as I rarely have more than three appointments before I have a fully fitting prosthesis.

About 8 years ago, I unfortunately got my funding cut by the NHS and had to get my legs made up in Nuffield Health. After 2 months, 12 appointments and 5 sockets they couldn’t get a socket to fit. This took a toll on my mental health as it was very difficult for me to take all this time of school, having to walk in a lot of discomfort and not knowing when I was going to be able to walk pain free again. Fortunately, I was able to retain my funding after this very stressful time. Dorset was then able to do what they do best and fit me with a socket within 2 weeks.

I would recommend Dorset Orthopaedic to anyone who is looking to get a comfortable fitting prosthesis, as it is a very easy experience.
