MyoPro

Dorset Orthopaedic are continually looking for new and effective ways to offer innovative treatments to our patients. In partnership with Myomo, we are able to offer an exciting powered orthosis called MyoPro. The MyoPro is a powered arm and hand orthosis (brace) designed to help restore function to upper extremities paralyzed or weakened by neuromuscular and neurological disease or injury.

The types of conditions it can help with are -

  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Brachial Plexus injury
  • Acquired Brain Injury
  • Cerebral Palsy

The patient completely controls their own hand, wrist, elbow, and arm; the robotic arm brace simply amplifies weak muscle signals to help move the upper limb. It works by sensing the weak muscle signals from the surface of the skin (no implants) then activating tiny motors to move your arm and hand just as you intend. The MyoPro may help restore an individual’s ability to perform activities of daily living, including feeding themselves, carrying objects and doing household tasks. Many are able to return to work, live independently and reduce their cost of care.

Many prosthetic products exist for people who have lost their arms, hands or legs, and while there are orthotic products to support weak legs, the MyoPro is the only wearable robotic device available to help restore function for those who still have their arms and hands but are unable to use them.

Learning to use the MyoPro successfully takes approximately 8 weeks of training with a specialist, 5 times per week, and to ensure that this is done correctly we have teamed up with a specialist rehab centre.
