Dorset Orthopaedic recently held another successful Case Manager Training Day at its Midlands clinic in Burton on Trent. The day was designed to provide Case Managers with an understanding and an insight into the journey an amputee goes through, and highlight the services available at Dorset Orthopaedic.
Clinical Services Director, Matthew Hughes opened the day by introducing Dorset Orthopaedic ambassador Mark Pattenden and emphasised the importance of an amputee having a comfortable socket. This was followed by a demonstration by Prosthetist Dawn Crofts comparing the traditional hand cast method of casting a socket to that of the pressure casting system. An explanation of the rectification process followed including how the data collected during the trial of a socket can help in choosing the best option to suit a patient’s lifestyle and needs.
The discussion then turned to prosthetic feet and how they impact on a patient’s ability to walk. Various current products were demonstrated to give the audience a solid understanding of what is available. This was followed by an overview of upper limb solutions, from silicone digits to Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR).
Physiotherapist Beth Langley talked about the benefits of Dorset Orthopaedics’ Residential Rehabilitation programme, explaining what a patient can expect to receive when they spend a full week under her care at Dorset Orthopaedic. Beth even got the audience involved, testing the hip alignment of one and getting the rest involved in assessing their own balance.
During this segment, the audience was introduced to Terry, a Residential Rehabilitation client, who had his right leg amputated due to sepsis two years after a serious fall whilst on holiday. Terry spoke of his experience of Residential Rehabilitation and how the Dorset Orthopaedic team always make him and wife feel like family on each visit. The work that he, Beth and the team put into his physio and recovery have helped him achieve his goals and has massively improved his quality of life.
Terry’s Case Manager Joanne Blackwell, HCML then spoke of her positive experience of working with Dorset Orthopaedic and emphasised how it has enhanced Terry’s confidence and mobility.
