Rehabilitation is an essential part of the journey to recovery for an amputee and we can offer the most important thing a human being can spend - time. Time to achieve your goals.
Losing a limb is a huge life changing event and our goal is to normalise living with a prosthesis.
In 2015 Dorset Orthopaedic introduced the first civilian Residential Rehabilitation programme in the UK. Taking a holistic approach to rehabilitation, our experienced clinicians and physiotherapy team work together to provide a multi-disciplinary team of experts ensuring not only that patients get the most suitable components, but the tools and knowledge to ensure they achieve maximum mobility and independence.
Our adaptive physiotherapy sessions can be incorporated as part of a treatment package with a new prosthesis or as a stand-alone service. We work together with our patients to discuss expectations, set goals and develop a clear strategy to ensure these are met.
For those who seek to enhance their recovery, we offer an accelerated rehabilitation programme - or Residential Rehabilitation. Often up to 5 days at a time, on a one-to-one basis, the programme significantly boosts both mobility and confidence. Historically people have been given a prosthesis and will receive physio but for only one or two hoiurs a week. Individual physiotherapy is the gold standard - the more rehab you can get at an early stage, with the biggest intensity, as provided by our Residential Rehab programme, can certainly offer the biggest benefits and the most impact on changing people's lives.
All residential programmes are tailor made to suit individual needs and are suitable for all levels of mobility. These programmes are offered at both our Ringwood and Midlands clinics.
The programme includes:
- A full and comprehensive prosthetic assessment by a Dorset Orthopaedic clinician
- Personalised treatment from clinical and sports medicine experts including physiotherapists, doctors, sports scientists, strength and conditioning specialists and soft tissue therapists.
Residential Rehabilitation is a comprehensive and intensive course of interdisciplinary rehabilitation to fast-track patients to help reach their goals. Our team of Physiotherapists, Prosthetists, Orthotists and Technicians are on-site so all patient needs can be met swiftly and any alterations can be made over the course of their stay.

“Dorset Orthopaedic and the rehabilitation package at St George’s Park has given me the chance to get further with a prosthetic than I ever thought I could. It has given me a lot more confidence to achieve everyday activities and a new found freedom”

“I felt really proud to see what mum had achieved over the two weeks. If only we had received the rehab 3 years ago, when she really needed it, who knows how much further forward we would have been now! We are so glad she has done it and what she has accomplished”
Ms S, Case Manager
“My client attended Perform at St Georges Park for the first time in January. This was also his first introduction to a microprocessor prosthesis. He made incredible progress throughout the week and benefited from consistency with his treating physiotherapist who saw him for an intensive programme during the five days he was there. The facilities were great and the location of the Perform facilities were within walking distance from the hotel which was ideal. Overall it was a very positive experience.”
